7th YOUTH Contest "Foreign in Europe": And the winner is….

Wie fühlt sich Europa an? Verwirrend, ein Karussell, ungerecht, schön?

I wanted to do something random and exciting and a Leonardo mobility internship in Romania felt like just the thing! So when I told my friends, family and work colleagues that I would be moving to Romania for four months there was always an awkward pause followed by "ROMANIA!?". I guess a lot of people have perceptions on what Romania and other Eastern European countries are like. I do not want this to be a negative blog post because my time in Romania has been very enjoyable and fun. And I truly believe that being different has contributed to this. Some of the best friends that I made, who I know will be friends for life, I made because they had the confidence to approach me at a bar or on the train and start a conversation with me. My time here in Romania has come to an end but I know that I will be back to visit (maybe even on a permanent basis) to the beautiful Carpathian land.

Beim Versuch meine Gedanken wegzutanzen und durch eine exzessive Nacht in Köln alles um mich herum zu vergessen, geschieht das Gegenteil. Ich analysiere das junge Publikum und komme ins Gespräch mit einem Westafrikaner. Die dicken kulturellen, politischen und gesellschaftlichen Mauern zwischen uns machen die gemeinsame Wellenlänge unmöglich. Ich verzweifle an zwanghafter political corectness und den Gedanken über unsere Weltpolitik. Ein Abend endet im Gedankenchaos, statt in freiheitlicher Tanzextase.

There is no such thing as being foreign in Europe, and let me explain why!

In diesem Gedicht geht es um meine Auffassung von einem Teil der gemeinsamen Geschichte Vietnams und Deutschlands.
Ich bin in Deutschland aufgewachsen, aber dann auch irgendwie nicht, da es eine starke vietnamesische Community gab.

So, I moved from the culture of Art in Russia St.Petersburg to a very small village in Germany. It is almost in the middle of nowhere. It seemed to be nice, but actually not so easy. Because when you live in the forest without so many peope surrounded you, many interesting thought become to appear... and Mentalität... Now I really feel the difference in our Cultures. From inside.

Europa ist ein sehr schönes Haus. Die Zimmer sind groß und gemütlich eingerichtet und selbst im Winter bleibt es behaglich warm. Auch die Mitbewohner sind sehr nett- selbst wenn wir nicht immer die gleiche Sprache sprechen. Europa ist ein Erfolgsmodell. Doch ich zweifele. Nicht nur an unserem Umgang mit Fremden- sondern auch daran, was das über unsere Freundschaft und uns selbst aussagt.
