Pasta all the way!
shortly about the German kitchen... :)
Reading the title you may think that I am an EVS-ler in Italy, but you are just wrong. I am living for already four months in the amazing Stuttgart, Germany. Quite big University City, trying to be a model for intercultural opening. There is no shortage of theaters, concerts, libraries, cafes – so if you are bored here it means that you are doing something wrong.
Besides the many positive things which you can experience it in the heart of Baden-Württemberg, there is one thing which can make your EVS days a little bit hard. And this is the German (mixed) food.
Before moving here (from Transylvania, Romania) I accurately documented myself: Germans are eating lots of potatoes. I considered this more than good news, but to be completely honest I was a little bit disappointed. The püree is made out of powder, in the shops I can’t find my favorite red potatoes and you can just easily buy everywhere (not so tasty) potato-salad. On the other hand you can find EVERYTHING related to pasta, noodles, spätzle and maultaschen.
According to an amateur research, realized be me, 8 from 10 youngsters (age between: 16-24) favorite food is the ones mentioned already. I agree that it is more than easy to prepare any of them, they are going into the cheap food category, and yes, sometimes they can be tasty. But let’s face it: there are thousands of delicious meals what you can prepare it fast and in a cheap way. E.g.:peas in cream sauce, gulasch, potato pancakes.
What I don’t understand is how it is possible to eat these meals every single day? What is secret of such a regularly pasta, noodles, spätzle and maultaschen consumption? And why I am the felon if time to time I am eating my pasta with ketchup?
Anyway apart from all the “pastaproblem” I can remunerate all the cheese types what I can find here and I consider simply masterpieces the vegetarian goodies.
Guten Appetit!
