Few hours of your time, a wonderful day for them
My project is basicly one of the most beautiful things that a person can do for human life: make mentally disable people feel like kids enjoying their lifes.
You just have to give them a little bit from your time to make them feel so happy, just play one game or bring them somewhere outside for a walk... I think it's one of the best sensations I've ever felt.
After spending more than 20 minutes thinking how to begin this text, I just decided to start from the end.
My voluntary project has made me be an open-mind-person, has helped me growing up and increases my empathy on other people.
What’s my job about? I’m working in a house with disable people, most of them mentally disable but also physically and all of them older than 60.
The reason why I logged on this project was to learn the German language, but I just wanted to learn it working with disables.
My uncle has Down’s syndrome. I’m so used to it; he’s living with my grandparents 5 minutes far from my house, so we’ve been seeing each other quite often.
But one day I realized that not everybody is as lucky as my uncle, not everybody lives with their family and enjoy a plenty life, there are many people who are living in a residence and don’t even see their relatives.
That was the point where I decided to start this project: life for them is just a routine, and that’s something I try to change on their life.
I spend 6 hours a day, 5 days a week with them. First I cook the breakfast and after that the action starts:
We play Ludo, Bingo, we paint, we create objects with plasticise, we make cakes or cook Spanish food, we make trips to get to know better Hamburg… They don’t get bored, and me either.
Really simple things make them feel so happy, and it makes you even more happy when you hear them saying: “ Die ist unsere beste Stück”
Definitely, decided myself to do this project is the best idea I have ever taken, not only because of my work, but also because of my friends and colleagues.
