Anyone can learn a new language, it just takes will.

I would like to continue my list of recommendations about language learning. This time I will name several useful tools and possible resources. Some of them are connected to the German language.

The German language is widely spoken in Europe, with 95 million native speakers mainly in Central Europe, and 10 to 15 million speak it as a second language. It is the official language and majority language of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, and South Tyrol, a bilingual and bicultural region in northeast Italy (it is also spoken in Luxembourg and Belgium but not as a majority language.)

Was one of the goals you have set, when you decided for volunteering at European Solidarity Corps, to learn or improve the language of a hosting country? So was mine and because of that, I decided to write about language learning tips that can be practical and useful for volunteers who also experience a language barrier.

There is one universal truth to language learning: it is a process that involves vulnerability and being open to new things. Living in a German city where a very special dialect is spoken -Sächsisch- can be a blessing and a curse! In this reportage I explore the world of languages and the cultural and politial meaning that sometimes hides behind innocent words.
