How the pandemic has changed female employment in Europe.
The coronavirus pandemic eloquently reminded the countries of Europe that ignoring the needs of young women in the context of the unfolding crisis threatens to increase poverty. Why this forecast can become a reality for Germany.
How important is the role of female doctors? As important is the role of female volunteers. It seems to me that this is not an easy time, volunteers and nurses are real heroes of Europe who sacrifice themselves. In the Marvel universe, after the epidemic, a female superhero and female nurse will appear as a superhero. This is a huge job, with a risk to life. While my project is ongoing, I thought several times, I could try myself in the role of a nurse, but I realized that it was only my dreams. Because I do not have a medical education. I very much empathize with all women, and decided to tell about their fate.
The European government considers it right to instill in women the necessary family values, allocating quite real budgetary funds for this dubious undertaking. At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers, which is 90% male, is not at all carried away by the idea of developing gender-based approaches to solving pressing problems. And in vain: in the field of health and social services in Europe, nearly half a million people work, 72% of which are women; quarantine also hit women’s self-employment.
The COVID-19 pandemic almost instantly turned the routine duties of doctors and nurses into one of the most dangerous. According to official data, at the end of April, a new type of coronavirus in the republic was laboratory confirmed in 820 medical workers, most of them are middle and junior medical staff. The infection temporarily deprived doctors of not only health, but also jobs. Serving medical facilities, which is also largely on the shoulders of women, carries no less risks: for example, a lifter of the central city clinical hospital in Munich died of infection.
Inna has been working in one of the city clinics in Munster since 2011. She is a mammologist and continued to receive patients throughout the quarantine. Three times a week, a total of about 60 patients came to her appointment. After working with them, she took off her mask, gloves, her white coat, changed her shoes and calmly drove home behind the wheel. “I didn’t have any patients with fever and I think there shouldn’t be any at all, because every person who came to the clinic was questioned, measured his temperature, and those who had suspicious symptoms were immediately sent to the filter” , - Inna explains the reason for her equanimity. She was tested twice on COVID-19 - the result was negative. Despite the availability of sanitizers and the fact that part of the medical staff completely dressed in protective suits, three employees of the clinic after testing were sent home for two weeks in quarantine.
UN experts pay attention: by default masks and costumes are made according to the male pattern, and, therefore, cannot provide women - obviously, who are in a different dimensional grid - with proper protection in the workplace. In addition, in Germany, men employed in healthcare and social services, for all their relative small numbers, earn more than their female counterparts (6.7% gap in 2018). The difference in nominal incomes is most likely due to the lower representation of women in leadership positions in medical institutions.
To be in solidarity is not only very difficult at this time. The girl I interviewed later called me and said she couldn’t stand it, she would work this month and quit. They were promised prizes, but even the money would not hold her. It is very difficult for her to see all this morally. And I understand her perfectly. During the project, every peak of emotional burnout, when you think - why do I need all this? I had it, most recently. But I tried to get rid of this all: go to work, play sports, listen to good music, write articles. And I coped with this burnout. If you read this, and you recognize yourself, my advice is to you, try to be safe from the project, and find something new. In your city, office, apartment, area where you live. Try something that you have not tried or were afraid to try. And everything will turn out, you'll see.
