Overcoming homesickness by sending letters and postcards!
Ow yeah, we live in the times of multi/media and online-information, but old-school activities can be really really nice. Visits of city post office with askings for envelopes, stamps and postcards – there is some magic of nostalgy – not just because of you write home or whenever, but also because of you use almost forgotten way of distributing message.
And I use to do it several times per a month! Before my EVS I was pretty addicted to e-mail, facebook and internet access in general. And I am still. But! I re-discovered melancholic feelings hiden in using postal service. To write an letter it costs longer time than to write an email or text message by mobilephone. Writing letters and also postcards can be considered as a ritual – for me for sure!
Anyway Timisoara Main Post Office is building you must see. It is built in Art NouVeau style. Except admiration exterior you can find also nice interior inside. And Romanian mailboxes? They have got special design as well. In local post office near my flat I found nostalgic envelopes and all the addresseeI sent them wrote me back they love it so much. And they also love feeling during opening their mailbox and finding there a new one surprise travelling physically through borders some days.
Right now I prefer this way of communication also because one more practical reason. As I have got really close relationship with my Grannie and as she is in my homecountry and as she is over 80, even if we were trying skype (she did it first time in her life and she did it great!), this is the most effective way how to stay in touch. Skype calls were really difficult for both of us. Although we overcome technical difficulties, there was still emotional pressure from her side as she cried a lot to see my face on desktop. To avoid this I decided to turn our communication in more traditional way. These days I am sending letters and postcards to more than 10 addressees.
See you hanging around Romanian mailboxes!
