Images, Bicycles, Feminism: The story of a Cyclo-Feminist

Ravy Puth gets off her bike. For the five kilometers from her apartment into the city she has taken her bicycle, as always. Of course. On her bike, she goes faster and can help protect the environment. But for Ravy, the bike is not merely a means of transport, but also a symbol of independence.

Ravy was raised in Montreal as the daughter of Cambodian refugees. Whilst every boy in Cambodia rides a bike, girls are never seen with one. When Ravy was small, her parents put her on a bike, but after falling off, Ravy never got back on. She finally learnt how to ride a bike at the age of 21 whilst travelling in Cambodia. Since public transport is poorly developed in this South East Asian country, Ravy didn’t have access to several places and constantly relied on others to get around. She quickly realized that she would only be able to see and experience everything she wanted to if she travelled by bike. A fellow traveler put her on a bicycle and taught her how to step into the pedals. Shortly after, Ravy decided to make a bicycle tour in the south of the country all by herself. She quickly realised that this journey was something extraordinary, especially from the perspective of Cambodian girls who had never seen a girl riding through the country on a bicycle all alone. For Ravy, this journey became a turning point and the beginning of an exciting feminist adventure.

Cycling and Sexism?

Back in Montreal, cycling has become an important part of Ravy’s everyday life. She rides her bike almost everyday and also works in a bike shop. As the only woman in the store, Ravy quickly realised that the cycling industry is mainly run by men. The choice of materials and designs for clothing are usually decided with a male clientele in mind. Whilst items are available in all shapes and colors for men, the choice for women is often limited to stereotypical pinks and purples, and saddle covers are usually covered in flowers or hearts. Ravy notes that the bicycle industry does not appeal to the needs of a range of female cyclists, but rather, its clothing is often only available for very athletically built women. She also detects sexism on a personal level, As the only female salesperson in the shop, Ravy was constantly confronted with comments about her body. "It was the first time in my life that I had seen discrimination so close and experienced it myself", says Ravy.

Ravy quit her job and started to work in another bike shop, where she faced the exact same prejudices. That was enough. Instead of giving up, Ravy decided to share her story by drawing attention to gender-related inequality in cycling. In collaboration with the Collective Les Dérailleuses, she spoke in public about ordinary sexism in cycling shops and began to draw illustrations of her own depictions of women on bicycles. Ravy wrote articles and illustrated the contents of the Collective’s first magazine publication in 2016.

A Feminist Fight seen through Illustration

When Ravy began her work as a cyclo-feminist and illustrator when she moved  to Bordeaux in 2016. She fights against sexism in the cycling industry with the help of illustrations and lectures. At last, she can portray women on bicycles as she sees them. The women in her pictures are young and old, big and thin, black and white, and show the diversity of the female cycling community. "Drawing is my way of telling stories, my story and the stories of other women," explains Ravy. Her drawings come from her personal experiences. They celebrate nature, adventure, cycling and are consciously political. Vulvae and menstrual cups on wheels pass through the landscape, and even a trained, female grandma cycles happily up a mountain. These are not typical images associated with cycling.

Bordeaux – A Paradise for Cyclists?

As shown in her illustrations, Ravy loves jumping on her bike and enjoying nature. "Here in France, it is really easy to travel by bike, because the culture of Tour de France has created a large community of cyclists, as well as a well-developed network of bicycle paths," says Ravy. Not only the surroundings can be easily explored by bike, but Bordeaux itself is ideal for cyclists. It is for this reason that the city is ranked the sixth most bicycle-friendly city in the world. Over the last 15 years, a remarkable infrastructure for cyclists has been developed. Bicycle lanes have been built practically everywhere, bicycle shops and cafes are found at most corners, and the city's own bicycle rental system, Vcub that was installed in 2010 has been a tremendous success. Besides this, investments in the extension of the tram line and introduction of the Sunday driving ban have significantly contributed to calming traffic flow. In Bordeaux’s future planning projects, pedestrians and cyclists will come first.

"I think that Bordeaux is a great city for bicycles, because cyclists are being considered in the city concept," explains Ravy. When she pedals through the city, she feels safe, even if cycling in Bordeaux is not always without risk. Drivers often react intuitively and overtake with risky manoeuvres – a very French habit, according to the cyclists. However, the attitude towards cycling has become more positive in recent years.

However, there is still a lot to do. Ravy will continue to tell untold stories - in images and maybe soon in cartoons too. Stories of Cambodian girls on two wheels, sexism in the local bike shop, and the small communities of Bordeaux who make the city, but almost never appear in its story. However, there is such beauty in Ravy’s narration, and in this case, a picture really does say more than a thousand words.

Bild, Rad, Feminismus: Eine Cyclo-Feministin erzählt 

Ravy Puth ist leidenschaftliche Radfahrerin, engagierte Feministin und Illustratorin. Sie lebt in Bordeaux und setzt sich für mehr Gleichberechtigung im Radsport ein. Eine Geschichte vom Radfahren, Frau-Sein und Bordeaux.

Ravy Puth steigt von ihrem Fahrrad. Für die fünf Kilometer von ihrer Wohnung bis zum Stadtzentrum hat sie – wie immer - das Rad genommen. Logisch: Das geht schneller und schont die Umwelt. Aber das Fahrrad ist für Ravy nicht nur bloßes Transportmittel, es ist vielmehr ein Symbol von Unabhängigkeit.

Ravy wächst als Tochter kambodschanischer Flüchtlinge in Montreal auf. In Kambodscha kann zwar jeder Junge Radfahren, die meisten Mädchen dagegen lernen es nie. Als sie klein ist, setzten ihre Eltern sie zwar aufs Fahrrad, als sie aber fällt, gibt Ravy auf. Richtig Fahrradfahren lernt sie erst mit 21 Jahren als sie auf Reisen durch Kambodscha ist. Weil der öffentliche Transport schlecht ausgebaut ist, hat Ravy zu vielen Orten keinen Zugang und ist ständig auf andere angewiesen. Sie weiß: Nur mit dem Fahrrad wird sie all die Dinge sehen und erleben können, die sie will. Eine Mitreisende setzt sie kurzerhand aufs Rad und bringt ihr bei, wie man in die Pedale tritt. Kurz darauf beschließt Ravy eine Fahrradtour in den Süden des Landes zu machen – ganz allein. Sie merkt schnell, dass diese Reise alles andere als selbstverständlich ist, vor allem für die kambodschanischen Mädchen, die noch nie gesehen haben, wie ein Mädchen allein auf einem Fahrrad durchs Land fährt. Für Ravy wird diese Reise zum Wendepunkt und zum Beginn eines aufregenden feministischen Abenteuers.

Radfahren und Sexismus?

Zurück in Montreal, ist das Radfahren aus Ravys Alltag nicht mehr wegzudenken. Sie fährt mit dem Rad zur Arbeit und beginnt in einem Fahrradladen zu arbeiten. Als einzige Frau im Laden merkt sie schnell, dass in der Fahrradindustrie die Männer bestimmen, wo’s langgeht. Allein die Auswahl an Materialen und Kleidung ist hauptsächlich für männliche Kundschaft gemacht. Während Artikel für Männer in allen Formen und Farben in den Regalen liegen, ist das Repertoire für Frauen oft pink und klischeebehaftet - zwischen Citybikes und geblümten Sattelüberzügen. Auf die speziellen Bedürfnisse weiblicher Radfahrerinnen ist die Fahrradindustrie überhaupt nicht eingestellt und Materialen und Kleidung sind oft nur für sehr athletisch gebaute Frauen verfügbar, merkt Ravy. Dazu kommt Sexismus auf einer persönlichen Ebene: Als einzige Verkäuferin muss sie sich ständig Kommentare über ihren Körper anhören. „Es war das erste Mal in meinem Leben, dass ich Diskriminierung so hautnah gesehen und selbst erlebt habe.“

Ravy kündigt und beginnt kurz darauf in einem anderen Fahrradladen zu arbeiten, wo sie auf genau die gleichen Vorurteile trifft. Das ist genug: Anstatt aufzugeben und das Fahrrad stehen zu lassen, beschließt Ravy ihre Geschichte zu teilen und auf die geschlechtsabhängigen Zugangsmöglichkeiten zum Radsport aufmerksam zu machen. Zusammen mit dem Kollektiv Les Dérailleuses spricht sie öffentlich über Alltagsexismus in Fahrradgeschäften und beginnt ihre eigenen Darstellungen von Frauen auf Fahrrädern anzufertigen. Als das Kollektiv im Jahr 2016 sein erstes selbstveröffentlichtes Magazin herausgibt, illustriert und schreibt Ravy einen Großteil der Beiträge.

Ein feministischer Kampf mit Bildern

Als Ravy im Jahr 2016 nach Bordeaux kommt, beginnt ihre Arbeit als Cyclo-Feministin und Illustratorin. Mit Bildern und Vorträgen kämpft sie gegen Sexismus der Fahrradindustrie. Endlich kann sie Frauen auf Fahrrädern so darstellen, wie sie sie sieht. Die Frauen sind jung und alt, dick und dünn, schwarz und weiß und zeigen, wie vielfältig das weibliche Geschlecht auf dem Fahrrad aussehen kann. „Das Zeichnen ist meine Art,Geschichten zu erzählen, meine Geschichte und die Geschichten von anderen Frauen“, erklärt Ravy. Ihre Zeichnungen leben von ihren persönlichen Erfahrungen und feiern Natur, Abenteuer und Radsport oder sind bewusst politisch:  Da fahren Vulven und Menstruationstassen auf Rädern durch die Landschaft und trainierte Rentnerinnen radeln fröhlich einen Berg hinauf.

Bordeaux – ein Paradies für Radfahrer*innen?

Und auch Ravy liebt es, sich aufs Rad zu schwingen und raus in die Natur zu fahren. „Hier in Frankreich ist es wirklich einfach, mit dem Fahrrad zu reisen, denn durch die Kultur der Tour de France gibt es eine große Fahrrad-Community und gut ausgebautes Netz von Fahrradwegen“, sagt Ravy. Nicht nur das Umland lässt sich hervorragend mit dem Rad erkunden, auch Bordeaux selbst ist für Radfahrer*innen bestens geeignet. Nicht umsonst belegt die Stadt an der Garonne Platz sechs der fahrradfreundlichsten Städte der Welt. In den letzten 15 Jahren hat sich eine bemerkenswerte Infrastruktur für Fahrradfahrer*innen entwickelt. Die Stadt ist heute fast überall mit gut ausgebauten Fahrradwegen ausgestattet, Fahrradläden und Fahrradcafés sprießen nur so aus dem Boden und das stadteigene Fahrradverleihsystem Vcub, dass im Jahr 2010 eingerichtet wurde, ist ein voller Erfolg. Investitionen in den Ausbau der Straßenbahnlinie und Fahrverbote am Sonntag haben zudem merklich zur Verkehrsberuhigung beigetragen. Und auch in den Zukunftsplänen der Stadt steht Raum für Fußgänger*innen und Radfaher*innen an erster Stelle.

“Ich glaube, dass Bordeaux eine tolle Stadt für Fahrräder ist, weil Radfahrer und Radfahrerinnen im Stadtkonzept miteinbezogen wurden“, erklärt Ravy. Wenn sie durch die Stadt radelt, fühlt sie sich sicher, auch wenn Radfahren in Bordeaux nicht immer ganz ungefährlich ist, denn oft reagierten die Autofahrer*innen intuitiv und überholen in riskanten Manövern – eine sehr französische Angewohnheit, findet die Radfahrerin. Die Einstellung zum Fahrradfahren habe sich aber besonders in den letzten Jahren zum Positiven gewendet.

Trotzdem bleibt noch viel zu tun. Ravy wird auch in Zukunft die Geschichten erzählen, die sonst kein Gehör finden: Geschichten von kambodschanischen Mädchen auf Rädern, Sexismus im lokalen Fahrradladen und in den kleinen Communities, die Bordeaux zwar mitgestalten, aber fast nie in ihrer Geschichte auftauchen. Und wie heißt es doch so schön: Ein Bild sagt mehr als tausend Worte.
