The on going conflict between Northern Ireland and the republic of Ireland in comparison to the division of Germany.
All of us who take part in the ESC stand for solidarity. We want to include people in a caring and loving way and help and support them in any way possible. Solidarity to me means being strong together. As I am doing my ESC in Ireland, I could not help but notice that there are some similarities between my home country germany during the German seperation of east and west (starting 1949 till 1990) and the current situation between Northern Ireland and the republic of Ireland which are currently two separate countries.
Ireland has a long history of colonisation starting in 1167 with the normans. They had to fight multiple fights against the British invaders. The English colonized Ireland and forced there protestantism onto the gaelic catholic beliefs that most irish shared. They banned their language and took away their freedom. The IRA ( Irish republican army) took matters into their own hands and founded their own parliament against the British law in 1919. The endless fights and attacks even escalated into a civil war in 1922. At this point Irish where fighting their own people, cousins and siblings had to conquer each other in battle and the republic of Ireland emerged as an independant state. Although Ireland was now offically splitted into the North under british rule and the Republic of Ireland which was ruled by the Irish.
To this day Ireland is splitted in half and you can find Pounds up in the north and Euro in the rest of the island. There is still a lot of tension in between both parts which has increased by the brexit and the possibility of a european border beetween both countries that share the same Island.
In contrary to Ireland Germany was occupied after the second world war by the victorious countries in 1945. England France and the US merged there terretories in the west and tried to implement democracy. the Sowjet Union implemented communism and ruled over the west of germany until 1949. in addition the capital Berlin was split in half and separated by the famous Berlin Wall.
Although the circumstances of the occupation of Ireland and Germany are different you can see that the inhabitants of both countries suffer in simmilar ways. Especially if there would be a physical border as a result of brexit, Ireland will feel there separation stronger than ever. It took 10,316 days to take down the Berlin Wall (from 1961 till 1989 ).
How long will it take to reunight two seperate countries that have been in partion for 100 years ?
